2 Men Rescued After Setting Fire To Vehicle That Crashed Into The Trinity River

Two men suffered major injuries in a crash in Trinity County Thursday night, then spent almost 19 hours stranded. At around 10:20, a Subaru driven by 53-year-old James Scott of Salyer with 20-year-old Trevor Callis of Weaverville as a passenger was westbound on Highway 299 west of Pony Creek road when it left the road down a steep embankment and overturned multiple times, coming to rest partly submerged in the Trinity River. The car could not be seen from the road and both men were trapped for an unknown time before managing to get themselves free. They were both too injured to make it up the bank back to the highway and with Hypothermia setting in they knew they would not survive another night in the cold rain, so at 5 O’clock Friday afternoon, Scott set fire to his Subaru. A passing driver saw the fire and called 9-1-1, and the men were rescued and transported to a Eureka hospital.
