Accused Burney Cold Case Killer Pleads Not Guilty

A man accused of murdering a teenager and sexually assaulting a woman in Burney more than 40 years ago has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him. Roger Neil Schmidt was 23-years-old in 1984 when he allegedly ambushed 18-year-old Terry Arndt, killing him, and raped an 18-year-old woman who was in Arndt’s car with him. The incident happened near Burney High School. Shasta County Sheriff’s detectives used DNA to identify Schmidt and extradited him from Arizona. Schmidt was arraigned in a Shasta County court Tuesday. He returns to court August 28th, when a preliminary hearing date should be set.
