Anderson Mayor Addresses Supervisors About County Jail Closure

An entire floor of the Shasta County Jail has been closed for a year now due to understaffing, and frustration is being felt at all levels of local government, not the least of which being the man who made the decision, Sheriff Michael Johnson, who says his department is doing all it can. At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Anderson Mayor Mike Gallagher stepped up during public comment period with a large contingent of Anderson City Officials behind him to complain. The Sheriff has stressed the difficulty in recruiting and retaining correctional deputies. Many have been hired for the positions through an aggressive recruiting campaign, but few have stayed on the job for very long.
