The controversy surrounding whether schools should tell parents when their children decide to change gender identity is now focused on Butte County. The Attorneys General of 16 states, including California, have filed an Amicus Brief with the 9th Circuit Court in support of a policy adopted by Chico Unified School District. A parent is challenging the policy, which limits staff from notifying parents unless there’s a compelling need to protect the student’s well being. The policy is in stark contrast to rules requiring parental disclosure that have been adopted by some schools, including Anderson Union High School District. Attorney General Rob Bonta has been fighting such policies, arguing that they place students at risk of abuse.
