Agricultural and residential backyard burning has resumed with permits in the areas under Cal-Fire protection in the Shasta-Trinity Unit, as well as Tehama-Glenn and Siskiyou. Redding Fire Department has followed suit and City of Redding residents may also burn piles in their backyards. A permit must be in hand while burning, but they’re free and available at cityofredding.gov. Cal-Fire permits can be obtained at burnpermit.fire.ca.gov. Only leaves and branches may be burned. The ground should be scraped to the dirt ten feet around and a shovel and water supply should always be at hand. Burn piles cannot be left unattended, must be 50 feet from structures and they can be no larger than 4 feet wide and 4 feet high if it’s on less than an acre. Shasta County burn day information is available by calling 224-8777. Information on safe burning is at fire.ca.gov.
