Burney Man Convicted Of 2nd Degree Murder

A man who moved from Arizona to Burney in 2020 has been convicted of murder. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office was called March 8th of 2021 to the rear parking lot of Burney Church of Christ on Superior Avenue. 61-year-old Mark Russell Anderson was in a travel trailer with injuries he had suffered in an assault. Anderson was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding but died of his injuries. Detectives learned that the assailant was 45-year-old Donald Joseph Marquez, who became acquainted with Anderson about a month before incident. He was questioned at his new home on Sugar Pine Avenue and after providing a statement he was arrested. On Tuesday Marquez was found guilty by a jury of second degree murder. He faces up to 15 years to life when he’s sentenced June 5th.
