The CHP has released more information about a shootout that killed a suspect and injured an officer in Tehama County on Sunday. At 11:37AM the officer stopped to help a driver with a broken down car on Southbound Interstate 5 south of Chard Avenue. He was met with fire from an assault-style rifle from the driver, identified as 39-year-old Joseph Michael Pate of Pittsburg, California. The officer was struck by multiple rounds and returned fire, striking pate several times. Pate then stole the CHP patrol car and fled southbound on the freeway. North of Finnell Avenue in Corning Pate ran the cruiser into a tractor-trailer, which veered off the freeway and toppled onto its side. The trucker had minor injuries. The CHP car also left the pavement, crashing into a field and catching fire. Pate was captured and transported to Enloe Hospital in Chico, where he later died. The CHP Officer underwent surgery and is recovering. Anyone with helpful information can call 529-7920.
