Most drivers are aware that when a school bus has flashing red lights activated, or a pop-out stopsign, drivers must stop. Still, the issue of vehicles passing buses and endangering children continues to be a problem. The CHP did an enforcement operation in Tehama County Wednesday during which an officer rode as a passenger on a school bus and watched for drivers who passed illegally. The officer then radioed nearby officers to stop the drivers and issue warnings. It was part of a state-wide operation. During a similar action last year, 80 school districts and 5 school bus contractors participated, and reported that 8,405 drivers failed to stop as buses were loading or unloading students. Almost 22,000 school buses operate daily in California.
