Here’s an important fact to note: there’s no such thing as “registering” for Amber Alerts. The system is used to quickly locate abducted children through engaging the public with broadcast alerts and highway message boards. The CHP, which is the agency responsible for activating Amber Alerts, says people have been getting phone calls from scammers calling themselves “Amber Alert Representatives”. They’re taking advantage of parent’s concern for their children’s well being and asking for confidential identifying information. In some cases they even go so far as to request a meeting at the victim’s home. The CHP says no personal information should ever be provided over the phone to anyone whose identity is not certain.
