Mount Shasta Area CHP is still looking for witnesses to a hit-and-run crash that happened a week ago and caused major injuries. At 5:35AM last Friday a driver identified as “Mr. John” was in a Toyota Highlander southbound on Interstate Five south of Sweetbrier Avenue at the northern edge of Shasta County when he drifted off the pavement and collided with a tree. His overturned vehicle and the tree both came to rest on the freeway. Another driver identified as “Mr. Peterson” saw the crash from the northbound side and pulled over. He ran across the lanes to try and help and was struck by an unknown southbound vehicle. A Ford Ranger then came along and hit the tree that was still in the lanes. The occupants of that truck sustained minor injuries. Peterson was transported to Mercy in Redding with major injuries. The CHP would like to identify the vehicle that hit him. Tips can be reported to 926-2627.
