Two passengers died in a crash west of Redding after the driver says he fell asleep at the wheel. At 11 O’clock Wednesday night 39-year-old Shane Grimes of Vancouver, Washington was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger westbound on Highway 299 in the Whiskeytown area. West of Grizzly Gulch Road, the pickup left the pavement, went down an embankment and overturned, coming to rest on its roof. The two passengers, a male and female whose names have not been released, both suffered fatal injuries. Grimes, who had only minor injuries, crawled out of the wreckage and called 9-1-1. None of the three of them were wearing seatbelts. Any possible witnesses are asked to call 225-0500.
