The Redding City Council approved the electric utilities updated fire mitigation plan Tuesday night. The first plan was approved in 2019 and according to state law must be updated every three years. REU Director Nicholas Zettel says most fires caused by the utility were either Mylar balloons getting tangled in power lines, or animals arcing in the lines. The utility has wrapped over 500 poles with retardant, upgraded its radio system, and opened an emergency operation center which was used six times last year including during a major snowstorm.
