During Tuesday evening’s regular meeting the Redding City Council will consider the future of the sports park off Old Oregon Trail and Viking Way. A 23-year-old public/private partnership with Big League Dreams was terminated last July after the company failed to make improvements that had been contractually agreed upon. Rather than close the facility, the Recreation Department said they could manage it in the short term, but it’s now time to come up with a long-term operational plan. It’s apparently working well, but it’s not sustainable because it’s mostly staffed with part-time Redding Aquatic Center employees. The council has three options. They can seek another private entity to operate the park, they can develop a permanent model for the city to run it, or they can look into closing or selling the facility.
