City Manager Recommends Appointing RPD Captain As New Police Chief

Following a long tradition of rising from the ranks, the next Redding Police Chief may be Brian Barner. City Manager Barry Tippin will recommend the appointment of Captain Barner to the City Council at next Tuesday’s meeting. Barner has spent his entire law enforcement career with the RPD, having started as a Police Explorer in 1992 while he was a junior in high school. He became a Cadet in 1994 and a Recruit in 1997, and has served in many roles for the department over the last 3 decades. Captain Barner is expected to take over for Chief Bill Schueller, who retires next month.
