City May Cancel Contract To Build South Redding Bridge

The City of Redding may terminate a contract for the construction of a bridge in South Redding. Abacus Construction has been working on the Eastside Road Bridge over Olney Creek since being awarded the contract in May of 2022. The original $3.7 Million contract has ballooned to more than $5.7 Million, partly due to the discovery of contaminated soil. The company has been threatened with termination multiple times, due in part to deficient insurance coverage and failure to complete the work according to the contract. Tuesday the city might sever ties with Abacus. The move is not without precedent. Earlier this year the company contracted for the big sewer and road project on and around the Placer Street Hill was fired, and a different company completed the project.
