A climber has died while trying to scale Mount Shasta. At 7 O’clock Friday evening an emergency beacon was activated at 9,500 feet elevation on the slope of Avalanche Gulch. 49-year-old David Lopez had collapsed and became unresponsive. Sheriff’s search and rescue joined Forest Service climbing rangers as they started toward the location. The CHP was unable to respond for a hoist rescue because of darkness. When rangers arrived, Lopez’s climbing partner was still trying to revive him with CPR, but he was pronounced dead just before 11PM.
