Crews Reach 40% Containment On Wonder Fire

A fire in the Mountain Gate area is 40% contained after burning 150 acres of thick brush and timber, sending a pall of smoke over Redding. The “Wonder Fire” started a little after 4PM Monday off Wonderland Boulevard and Ponderosa Road near the Calaveras Cement Plant. It spread at a moderate rate over the railroad tracks and up the hill toward Lake Shasta, prompting an evacuation warning for Bridge Bay. Ground crews were hindered by the rough terrain and downed power lines, but they got a lot of help from retardant-dropping air tankers and water-dropping helicopters. Crews have been working to build fire lines. There are still 200 personnel on scene. Road closures have been lifted, Union Pacific has resumed train traffic through the fire zone, PG&E has re-energized power lines and the evacuation warning for Bridge Bay has been lifted. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
