Two inmates in Tehama County Jail have suffered apparent Fentanyl overdoses. Monday night a little before 11 O’clock an inmate was found unresponsive, and less than an hour later inmates alerted staff to a second person who was also unresponsive. Both patients were treated with Naloxone and transported to a hospital. One of them has been released but the other is still hospitalized in critical condition. Both are believed to be unintentional overdoses. Major crimes detectives are investigating. All inmates are thoroughly searched during the booking process but Fentanyl is extremely concentrated and therefore easy to conceal. In mid-December there were four suspected Fentanyl overdoses among inmates in Shasta County Jail, including one fatality. 24-year-old Jonathan Dejesus Hurtado of Shasta Lake City could not be revived and was pronounced dead. Federal officials say Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for all Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.
