Future Of County Elections Commission On The Agenda For Tuesday’s Supervisors Meeting

A re-appointment to the Shasta County Citizens Elections Advisory Commission will be considered, and a new supervisor will start a discussion about the nature and purpose of the panel. Patty Plumb was appointed by Patrick Jones when the commission was first met in January of last year. The commission currently has two vacancies, and cannot meet without a quorum. Some think it should stop meeting altogether, including some former commissioners, with many critics saying the panel exists only to sow distrust in the elections process. Members are not paid anything, but because of the paid county employees present at each meeting, the commission has cost taxpayers more than $88,000 in the past year, in addition to the time spent by Elections Department staff at some meetings. Supervisor Matt Plummer has asked that a discussion about the commission be placed on Tuesday’s agenda.
