A $103,500 grant awarded to Shasta County Health and Human Services will allow the agency to buy child car safety seats and provide them to parents who are less able to afford them. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for U.S. children up to the age of 13. Using age and weight appropriate car seats reduces the risk of injury by 71 to 82%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s important to know how to install them correctly as well. Local car seat checkup events between 2021 and 2023 showed nearly 91% were not installed the right way.
