Hearing Will Decide Whether To Charge Young Murder Suspect As An Adult

Steele Stewart was 17-years-old when he was charged in the stabbing death of a Corning teenager at a party. The court is still trying to decide if he’ll be tried as an adult or a juvenile. He’s now 18, but he was still a minor on April 16th of last year. That’s when Tehama County Deputies, Corning Police and CHP Officers were called to a party on Ohio Avenue near the Sacramento River in Corning. It turned out out be a Quinceanera, a traditional Hispanic coming-of-age ceremony for a 15-year-old girl. About 200 people were there, and two stabbing victims were found. 14-year-old Efrain Vargas Jr of Gerber was stabbed in the torso and later died. A 15-year-old boy was stabbed twice in the back, and he was soon released from the hospital. Based on witness reports, Stewart was identified as the culprit and arrested about 10 hours later at a home on West Street in Corning. The motive remains unclear. In September a judge granted the DA’s motion to charge Stewart as an adult, but the defense challenged the motion and the case is now awaiting a fitness hearing on January 11th. Stewart remains in custody at Juvenile Hall.
