Shasta County’s annual budget hearings will continue Wednesday in the Board of Supervisors Chambers and the public is encouraged to observe, with a public comment period Thursday following the last of the departmental presentations. The proposed county budget is $710 Million for the next fiscal year starting July 1st. Deputy County Executive Officer Erin Bertain says law enforcement receives well over half of all the county’s discretionary funds. She says the budget includes $34.2 Million for jail construction, but that depends on whether voters approve a county-wide sales tax. Each county department will have present their spending proposals in open session. Wednesday’s presentations will be made by Health and Human Services and Public Resources, which include Public Works, Agriculture and Resource Management. The hearings are set to wrap up Thursday with the public safety agencies. The proposed budget and previous years budgets are available for review on the county’s website at shastacounty.gov.
