Fire officials continue to seek out and eliminate small fires resulting from lightning strikes that touched down earlier this week on the Shasta-Trinity, Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. At least 97 fires were sparked by lightning over the weekend, but most were very limited in size and were challenging only due to their remote locations
The Shelly Fire started July 3rd near Shelly Lake in the Marble Mountains of Siskiyou County. Growth has slowed down. it’s now 15,460 acres with 18% containment. Six people have been injured. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for thousands of people. That fire is being fought by both Cal-Fire and the Forest Service, with more than 3,000 personnel on scene.
A fire continues to grow without containment south of Willow Creek in the Mosquito Creek Drainage. It’s grown to around 4,600 acres of heavy timber as the Forest Service says it’s shown extreme fire behavior. Evacuations are in effect. Due to the extreme terrain the fire is mostly being fought from the air, with air tankers and helicopters.
The Rim Fire that started Saturday afternoon in Lassen County east of Little Valley remains at 1025 acres, now with 50% containment.
