Shasta County’s January unemployment rate of 6.4% jumped a whole percentage point from December’s 5.4% rate. The jobless rate last January was 5.7%. There are 2,400 more workers in the labor force than last January and 800 fewer than in December. Large year-over losses were seen in wholesale trade and, to a lesser degree, food services. They were largely offset by employment gains in construction, business services, education, government and tribal employment. Tehama County’s January jobless rate was 7%. It was 7.5% in Trinity County and 8.7% in Siskiyou County. It was 5.7% for the state and 4.1% nationally.
