Local tourism promoter Visit Redding is reviving the “Lake Redding Regatta”, an event that took place in the 1930’s. Organizers say kayakers and stand up paddleboarders of all skill levels are welcome. Headwaters Adventure Company will hold river safety clinics for participants. Spectators are very much encouraged, with a festival atmosphere including live music and food and drinks for sale. The event will be August 25th from 10AM to 4PM at Lake Redding Park by the Diestelhorst Bridge. It was a very different Sacramento River in the 1930s. The original event took place prior to the construction of Shasta Dam. The water was warmer and the size of the river was very much dependent on the seasons.
