Following a longtime tradition, Shasta County’s annual peace officer memorial ceremony was held Thursday on the front steps of the old courthouse. A large crowd of law enforcement officers and their supporters gathered to honor the sixteen members of Shasta County law enforcement who have died in the line of duty since 1885. Redding Police Chief Brian Barner says he feels like the average Shasta County resident would be more likely than people in other parts of the country to help an officer in trouble.
