A man has made a plea deal with Shasta County prosecutors after killing a man during a fight last year near Shasta Lake City. Early the morning of last October 8th, a report of a disturbance brought deputies to Construction Way, which is off Lake Boulevard north of Pine Grove Avenue. They found 34-year-old Alex Stevens badly injured from an apparent assault. He was hospitalized and 10 days later he was dead. Detectives determined that Stevens had been at a gathering in an industrial building, where evidence of an assault was found. An autopsy led to the cause of death being ruled homicide by head injuries. 37-year-old Robert Samuel Schmidt has been given a 12 year sentence for voluntary manslaughter and battery. Schmidt had punched Stevens, who fell and hit his head on the ground. Schmidt then abandoned Stevens to die instead of calling for medical help.
