Man Shot By RPD Back In Custody After Being Released From Nevada Hospital

A man who was shot by Redding Police was inadvertently set free after medical treatment. On March 26th at 4PM Redding Police recognized 46-year-old David John Schaeffer of Anderson, sitting in a parked car in the East Cypress Safeway Shopping Center parking lot, and they knew he had an outstanding felony arrest warrant. As an officer announced himself and approached the car, Schaeffer reportedly drove straight toward the officer. That’s when shots were fired by police, who then pursued the car through the Lowes parking lot, across Cypress and down Alfreda Way until it crashed into a parked car near the intersection with Downard Lane. Officers then learned Schaeffer had been struck by gunfire. No officers were injured. Schaeffer was initially transported to a local hospital, then was transferred to an out-of-the-area hospital for further care. He was then released without notification to police. Detectives launched a search and learned that Schaeffer was in the Reno area. On Thursday he was arrested by Nevada law enforcement and is in the Washoe County Jail awaiting extradition.
