Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale This Week

The 84th Annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding sale is this week at the Tehama District Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. It’s the largest market for bulls, horses and livestock dogs west of the Rockies, and is vital to the beef industry in the western states. Bull sales last year totaled $1.6 million. Bull prices averaged more than $6,100, with one Hereford fetching $16,500. The average price for geldings was around $22,000. One bay gelding out of Corvallis, Oregon sold for $72,000. That’s a high price for an animal that’s not even going to breed. The auction of 13 stock dogs earned nearly $160,000, with an average price of $12,288. The top dog was from Montague, selling for $50,000. Sifting and grading began Tuesday as judges and veterinarians make sure only top quality animals get to the sales ring. Thursday owners will show off their stock, and Friday and Saturday the big auction takes place. Saturday night is the Red Bluff Bucking Battle, followed by a dance party. Anything with a western theme is already being sold at the event, from handmade saddles and jewelry to furniture and livestock trailers. There’s also a western art show and auction.
