Redding Considers Crackdown On Illegal Camping After Supreme Court Ruling

The Redding City Council is considering taking a more aggressive approach to illegal camping after a recent Supreme Court decision. In June the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a lower court ruling that prevented cities from enforcing most illegal camping and vagrancy laws if there’s no free shelter available. During Tuesday night’s council meeting, Police Chief Brian Barner said the department has already cut the warning time given to illegal campers from 48 hours to 24 hours, and after 3 violations there’s no warning at all and camps are immediately cleared. The council is considering imposing a fee to store belongings seized from homeless camps.
