Food waste is a huge problem for the City of Redding Solid Waste Division. Food waste accounts for about 30 percent of all garbage collected. Now, to comply with a senate bill, the City of Redding is requiring all citizens to use the green waste bin instead of the regular trash bin to dispose of food waste. Food in the green waste bin can be collected and taken to the landfill where it will be composted, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions that would be produced if it were in the regular trash. Remove all packaging from the food waste before disposing of it, and don’t use plastic garbage bags, even the ones that say they are biodegradable. The food should be placed in a brown paper bag before being placed in the green bin. Yard trimmings can still be placed in the green bin.
