Redding Rancheria Chairman Travels To Washington D.C For Ceremony To Designate New National Monument

More than 200,000 acres of Medicine Lake Highlands in Southern Siskiyou County has been designated as a new national monument. The Pit River Nation had made the proposal in November of 2023 and campaigned for it since then. Their name for the area is Sattitla and that’s how it shall now be known. The national monument designation makes it off-limits for mining or other exploitation. The official signing by President Joe Biden took place Tuesday. It was scheduled for last week, but delayed due to the fires in Los Angeles. Redding Rancheria Chairman Jack Potter and other tribal leaders traveled to Washington D.C. and stood beside the President Tuesday for the signatory ceremony.
