Residents File Lawsuit Over Supervisor Jones’ Proposed Gun Range

A group of Millville Plains residents has organized their opposition to a large outdoor shooting complex planned by Shasta County Supervisor Patrick Jones. The 152 acres on Leopard Drive would feature long-range rifle firing lines, handgun bays, and clay target shooting ranges. There would also be several large buildings. Jones would want to operate the club 5 days a week from 8AM to 8PM and hold up to 14 events a year with hundreds of people shooting. It would also allow overnight RV camping. A lawsuit names Jones and the Board of Supervisors for a number of points, including failure to file an Environmental Impact Report. The group says the county hasn’t addressed possible impacts to Eagles and other wildlife or impacts to water quality. They also contend that errant rifle fire could reach 97 surrounding homes and businesses. Last October the board approved the project 3 to 1 with Jones abstaining. At 9 O’clock Monday morning a judicial review will address a request by Jones to disqualify judge Ban Hanna, a former Deputy DA.
