Redding Electric Utility is proposing a hike in electricity rates, and will hold workshops to justify it to their customers. The proposal will be made to the City Council December 5th. REU will ask for an increase of 4% at the start of next year, and another 4% in 2025. Utility officials say that even after the boost, REU rates will still be among the lowest in the state. Reasons cited include the rising cost of procuring wholesale electricity, the rising costs of wildfire mitigation, planned capital projects and replacement of aging infrastructure. A workshop will be held Thursday from 4:30PM to 6:30PM at the REU Office on Avtech Parkway off Airport Road, and another one will take place Friday from 10AM to Noon at the M.L.K. Center on Sheridan Street. More information is at cityofredding.gov/electricrates.
