The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office has seen to the county’s first sentencing under the strict guidelines of Proposition 36, which took effect last month. 38-year-old Sean Edwards was busted for shoplifting at Safeway, which would previously have been a misdemeanor. Due to 2 prior theft convictions, the new law allowed the crime to be prosecuted as a felony, and Edwards was sentenced to 32 months in state prison.
