Shasta County’s Public Defender Announces Resignation At Tuesday’s Supervisors Meeting

Another Shasta County department head has resigned. During Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting the county’s Public Defender William Bateman announced he was stepping down from the post he’s held since 2018. That was following the retirement of Jeff Gorder, a frequent critic of the board majority and a leader of the effort to recall Supervisor Kevin Crye. Bateman is the latest in a long string of resignations, retirements and terminations of some of the county’s top talent, including Resource Management Director Paul Hellman last month.
