After an abrupt jump in the Winter and early Springtime, Shasta County’s unemployment rate is again edging downward. The May rate of 4.8% is an improvement from the 5% in April and the 6% in March, but still well above the 3.9% seen last May. Year-over improvements have been seen in government jobs, education and health services, as well as the bellwether leisure and hospitality sector, while private financial activities have suffered. Shasta County’s 4.8% in May compares to a 4.5% statewide jobless rate and 3.4% nationally. It was 5.7% in Tehama County, 5.5% in Trinity County and 5.9% in Siskiyou County.
