Sheriff Will Unveil New Plan To Reopen Closed Floor Of The Shasta County Jail On Wednesday

Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson has a $1.6 Million plan to staff the jail and reopen the closed floor. One floor of the jail has been closed for more than a year due to an inability to retain guards, resulting in a lack of accountability for suspects, who are frequently booked and then released on their own recognizance within a few hours. The sheriff wants to convert 10 correctional deputy positions to full deputies. The full scope of the sheriff’s staffing plan was not revealed Tuesday. He said he wants to meet with the Chairman and the CEO Wednesday morning to present it in full.
