The Shoe Fire has grown to more than 3,230 acres, now with 7% containment. Forest Service crews have been establishing contingency lines for structure protection, and in anticipation of warmer and drier weather. Mandatory evacuations and warnings are in effect. The Shoe Fire started shortly after one o’clock last Wednesday afternoon near the Madrone Campground in the Sulanharas Creek drainage (formerly Squaw Creek) 12 miles southwest of Big Bend. It’s burning in thick timber on rugged steep terrain. There was new growth Sunday in the Beartrap Creek area.
Smoke in the Redding area has been measuring at moderate-to-unhealthy levels on air quality monitors. People should limit their outdoor activities, especially the very young, the very old, and those with respiratory issues.
A fire was held to about a quarter acre of trees and brush Saturday off Cascade Boulevard near Arrowhead Way. The cause is under investigation, but there are large homeless encampments very near to the origin of the fire.
