Southbound I-5 Opens Early Tuesday After Big Rig Catches Fire Monday Evening

A collision caused a truck fire Monday night that blocked Southbound Interstate 5 in North Redding. The crash between a Honda Civic and a tractor-trailer happened shortly after 8 O’clock just north of Twin View Boulevard. A lot of Diesel spilled but it was kept contained. The 50-foot trailer was loaded with empty broken down cardboard boxes, and quickly became engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished nothing remained of the truck or trailer except a smoldering mass. One person was transported with minor injuries. Traffic backed up for miles, and was detoured down Highway 273 and back to the freeway. It took a long time to clear the mess from the roadway and the southbound lanes of the freeway finally reopened at around 4AM.
