On Monday the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted in closed session to hire yet another County Counsel. We don’t yet know the name of the new top legal advisor to the county, but if the recent track record is consistent we may not have very long to get to know that person. The county has had 5 different County Counsels in the past 12 months. Rubin Cruse held the position for 12 years before he decided to go into private practice in March. The job then went to his assistant, James Ross, but he announced his resignation in July. He planned to stay until August but left early. His last day was marked with an odd farewell as his office was searched and deputies seized his laptop computer and cell phone. There’s been no explanation of that action. Since then 2 different interim counsels have been named prior to yesterday’s selection.
