Supervisors May Hire New County Health Officer On Monday

Shasta County may hire a new Health Officer Monday. A Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 3:30PM with only one issue on the agenda. The board will hear public comments and then go into closed session to consider the hiring. The person being considered for the job has not been disclosed. In May of last year the board voted 3 to 2 to fire Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Ramstrom. Though she was dismissed without cause, it’s generally believed to be due to her adherence to state laws related to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was criticized by some groups for heavy handed enforcement, even though she and her public health colleagues were never more restrictive than the state required. The county maintained a hands-off policy it called “enforcement through education”.
