The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has finally come to terms with a doctor willing to be the County Health Officer. During the meeting on Tuesday, the board will likely approve a contract with Doctor James Mu. The county has been without a Health Officer since May of last year when the board voted 3 to 2 to fire Doctor Karen Ramstrom without cause. As the board’s agenda states, the County Health Officer’s responsibilities include preventing the spread of contagious diseases and enforcing public health orders required by state and federal law. Presumably, that’s a description of what got Doctor Ramstrom fired. Doctor Mu is at least the fourth candidate interviewed in the last few months. He has had a private medical practice in Shasta County for the past 30 years.
