Supervisors Vote Against Flights To Denver At Tuesday’s Meeting

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors was not in the mood to help travelers Tuesday. Earlier this year the board had requested proposals from organizations to do tourism marketing. Some out-of-the-area groups made pitches, as did the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce, which scored highest in the process. In October the board sent the Chamber a notice of intent to award a contract for as much as a Million Dollars annually. On Tuesday Chamber President Todd Jones was received with compliments for his professionalism, but no apparent motivation to enter into a contract. Feeling that they can market the area through internal county government efforts without dipping into the General Fund.

The board also was asked Tuesday to pitch in another $100,000 to wile United Airlines into establishing a flight from Redding to Denver. The county has already contributed $100,000 to the revenue guarantee, as the City of Redding has raised around $1.6 Million, including $290,000 of taxpayer money. The budget amendment needed a four-fifths vote but Mary Rickert and Kevin Crye voted against it.
