Supervisors Vote To Open Mosquito Board Position To Other Candidates

A seemingly routine board appointment became a political issue at Tuesday’s Shasta County Supervisors meeting. There was only one applicant for a vacancy on the Shasta County Mosquito and Vector Control District Board of Directors, and that was Donnell Ewart, who retired as County Health and Human Services Director last year. As a well educated Epidemiologist, Ewart is undoubtedly overqualified for the position, but he had been criticized for adhering to state law during the pandemic. Supervisors Rickert and Garmin moved to approve the appointment, but the board ended up voting 3 to 2 to approve a motion by Chris Kelstrom to repost the position for other candidates.
