Long disputed documents concerning former Shasta County Sheriff Eric Magrini will finally be released by Shasta County. The Record Searchlight and the county have been embroiled in a legal fight over the court-ordered release of the documents after multiple public records requests starting in August of 2021 concerning issues surrounding Magrini’s dismissal as Sheriff following staff votes of no confidence, his subsequent appointment to the newly created position of Assistant County Executive Officer, and the appointment of Michael Johnson as replacement Sheriff. Magrini’s new job came with a 31% boost in salary. The county said the internal communications were confidential, and the Searchlight sued. A judge ruled the county must give up the documents pay the newspaper’s legal fees but the county released a statement saying that the Searchlight was being misleading and that the county must maintain confidentiality for its employees. The materials were redacted to remove personal information. Tuesday during closed session the Board of Supervisors voted to release some of the requested materials.
