A major concern on the Shoe Fire is now trying to prevent runaway erosion as rains wash down the very steep muddy slopes. Suppression repair operations are well underway. Dozers and hand crews are eliminating smoldering debris beneath piles of slash in the very thick and rugged forest landscape. The fire is now 80% contained after burning 5,124 acres. It started October 9th on the north side of Lake Shasta 12 miles southwest of Big Bend, and it was human caused. All evacuation orders have been lifted, however a forest closure for the area remains in effect.
