A mock election is scheduled to be conducted Thursday as a demonstration of the manual tally system that may not happen. It’ll take place from 1 to 6 at the Elections Office at Market and Placer. Participation is on a drop-in basis, but those who attend are asked to stay for at least an hour. Meanwhile in Sacramento, the governor yesterday signed AB969, which effectively bans hand tallies for any election with more than a thousand voters, setting up a possible collision between Board of Supervisors Chair Patrick Jones, who orchestrated the end of machine balloting, and Cathy Darling-Allen, the independently elected Registrar of Voters who is singularly authorized to run the election according to the law.
