Update: Redding Hazardous Waste Facility Remains Closed After Tuesday’s Explosive Scare

The hazardous waste facility at the City of Redding Transfer Station on Abernathy Way remains closed. Loads of household trash, green waste, and anything else that does not require special handling can still be taken to the facility as usual, but the solid waste division says they are still trying to be sure that no explosive or otherwise dangerous remnants are left from an incident that closed the facility on Tuesday. The Shasta County Bomb Squad was called, and eventually an on-site detonation was done, after someone brought in a box full of old bottles containing unknown substances that had been found in the house of a deceased family member. Solid waste officials say a good tool to determine what should be done with an unknown or potentially unstable substance is available at cityofredding.gov/wastewizard. They also say that before transporting something in doubt, they can be called at 224-6201. It’s not yet known when the hazardous waste portion of the transfer station will reopen.
