Update: Two Juveniles Killed In Landslide Near Shasta Dam

Multiple resources from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and the CHP were dispatched Thursday to an area near Shasta Dam after two juveniles were caught in a landslide. They were caught in a mass of rocks and gravel that broke away from a hillside near a drainage culvert. The location is near a campground in the Coram area, located along the Sacramento River beneath Shasta Dam in the off highway vehicle park. When the callout was done shortly after 9AM, one child was unresponsive and the other was missing. The second patient was underwater partly trapped under rocks and debris and was spotted from the air by a CHP helicopter crew. The first juvenile could not be revived and was also declared dead at the scene. Al non-essential traffic was restricted from crossing the dam during the recovery effort. The Bureau of Reclamation reduced water releases from the dam to make it less difficult for the dive team to recover the body. A large off-road racing event is planned for the OHV park this weekend. The Bureau of Land Management says there are no plans to cancel or postpone the event as a result of the tragedy.
